What Is The SIPDE Method?
The SIPDE method is a five-step checklist for defensive driving. Drivers who follow these steps can process information more rapidly, enabling them to make safer decisions.
Scan or Search
Scan (sometimes called “search”) is the first step. It involves continuously keeping your eyes moving, looking ahead, to the sides, and through your mirrors. Scanning in this way allows you to get a full view of the road and prevents you from developing tunnel vision.

Decide
Now that you’ve made your predictions regarding the hazards near you, you can make the safest choice. You may need to steer, brake, or accelerate to avoid an accident. The main goal in this step is to create a safe area around your vehicle.
Execute
Once you’ve made your choice of action, carry it out as safely and smoothly as possible. This could involve changing lanes, applying the brakes, or flashing your lights in warning. If you have followed the other steps in the SIPDE method, you should be able to take action with confidence.
What to Do if an Accident Occurs
Even if you use the SIPDE method exactly as you should, you might not be able to avoid a crash. Georgia has at-fault laws for car accidents, so you will need to demonstrate that the other party was negligent or wrongful in their conduct to be able to recover your losses.
